If the machine smells hot, cuts out mid-cycle, or you have a gas dryer that can’t exhaust — stop using it and pick up the phone. Burning smell while it runs
A hot-lint or scorching smell during a cycle means lint is sitting somewhere it's getting cooked. Stop the dryer and leave it off.
Dryer cutting itself off mid-cycle
The machine's thermal cutoff is tripping because exhaust heat has nowhere to go. That's a restriction, not a broken dryer — usually.
Gas dryer with a blocked vent
A gas dryer that can't exhaust outdoors is pushing combustion byproducts somewhere. Treat this as urgent, not as a laundry inconvenience.
Nest or animal in the termination
Chirping, scratching, or nesting material at the outside hood. A packed nest against the damper blocks exhaust completely.
Storm or roof damage
Termination hood torn off, roof jack damaged, or duct crushed by a fallen limb — the run is now open to weather and wildlife.
After a lint fire
If anything in or around the vent has burned, the duct needs scoping before the dryer runs again — heat damage hides inside walls.

Stop the dryer
Turn it off and leave it off. Nearly every dryer-vent emergency gets worse with one more cycle, and none of them get better.

If you smell gas, leave and call the gas company
A gas smell is not a vent call. Get everyone out, don't touch switches, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Call us afterward.

Cut the power at the outlet or breaker
If there's a burning smell and it's safe to reach, unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker so nobody restarts it by habit.

Photograph what you can safely see
The outside termination hood, the hose behind the machine, anything scorched. Photos let us bring the right parts on the first trip.
