Almost every bad dryer vent we open in an existing house was legal-looking and doomed the day it was framed: a laundry too far inside the footprint, one elbow too many, a closet with no depth behind the machine. Nobody made a mistake exactly — the duct was simply the last thing anyone thought about, and by the time it mattered the walls were closed. The whole value of bringing us in early is that the fix is free at rough-in and expensive at every point afterward.
Two trips. Neither is optional.
One while the run can still be moved, one to prove it works. Builders who buy only the first get an unverified vent; builders who buy only the second get a phone call in year two.
Set the route while it can still be changed
We run the duct while the framing is open: rigid metal, joints in the direction of airflow, sealed with foil tape, fastened without a single screw projecting into the airstream. Developed length is calculated on site against what IRC M1502 allows, with every elbow deducted, and the number is written down rather than eyeballed. If the route as drawn does not fit inside the allowance, this is the two hours where it is cheap to fix.
Prove the run works before anyone signs for it
Transition connector installed to UL 2158A, exterior hood and backdraft damper checked by hand, and airflow measured at the termination with the dryer running. A vent that was built correctly and never tested is still an unverified vent. The reading goes on the closeout sheet with the route drawing and the photographs from rough-in.
Four choices, made once.
None of these are visible in a finished house, and all four determine whether the owner is calling somebody about their laundry in five years.
The elbow budget
Every bend costs developed length, and the allowance is finite. A laundry on an interior wall two turns from an exterior face can burn the entire budget before the duct leaves the floor. Counting elbows at rough-in is how a house avoids needing a booster it was never designed to carry.
Where the run terminates
A wall cap on the nearest exterior face is the shortest, cheapest and most serviceable option, and it is not always where the elevation wants it. Roof jacks solve architecture and create a lifetime of ladder work for the owner. Soffit terminations invite re-entrainment. This gets chosen once and lived with for thirty years.
Depth behind the machine
A laundry closet framed to the minimum leaves the dryer crushing its own connector against the wall, which throttles a perfectly good duct on day one. A recessed vent box or a periscope fitting solves it, but only if the box is planned at rough-in rather than discovered at trim-out.
Whether a booster is genuinely required
Where no shorter legal route exists, the answer is a listed dryer exhaust duct power ventilator, not a generic inline fan. We would rather redraw the route than sell one, because a booster is a device the homeowner now has to maintain and a service item on your warranty file. It is the last option, not the easy one.
The closeout package outlives the job number.

Where the duct actually runs, in what material, with the measured developed length and the elbow count. On repeat plans, the drawing is reusable and the field notes tell you where a specific lot deviated.
Rough-in photographs before cover
The open run, the joints, the fasteners, and the support, photographed before insulation goes in. The one set of images nobody can retake later, and the first thing anyone asks for when a question comes up.
Verified airflow at trim-out
A reading taken at the termination with the appliance running, recorded per unit. It is the difference between a vent that was installed and a vent that is known to work.

What we cannot engineer around.
We do not design the house. If the laundry has been placed where no compliant route exists without a booster, we can say so early and clearly, but moving a laundry is your architect's decision and your buyer's floor plan. Being brought in at plan review means that decision happens on paper; being brought in at rough-in means it happens with framers standing around.
A correctly built vent is not a maintenance-free vent. Length and elbow count set how fast lint accumulates, and a long run in a family home will need cleaning sooner than a short one. We put that expectation on the homeowner handoff page rather than letting the buyer assume the duct is permanent, because the alternative is a warranty call that was never a defect.
And on repeat plans we quote after walking one house of each type. A plan set tells us the intent; the first lot tells us what your framers actually build.
Per plan, not per surprise.
Identical houses vent identically, so a subdivision is priced per plan type once we have walked one of each. What moves the number is run length, termination type, and whether the laundry needs a recessed box behind the machine — not the lot number.

Do you work off our plans before the trade is on site?
Yes, and it is the cheapest hour anyone spends on this. Give us the laundry location and the exterior elevation and we will tell you whether the run fits inside the developed length allowance with the elbows the layout requires. On a repeat plan you fix it once and every subsequent lot inherits the fix.
What happens if the route only fails at trim-out?
Then the options get worse and more expensive, which is exactly why we push for the rough-in visit. After drywall, changing a route means opening a wall or a ceiling and repairing finishes. The alternatives at that point are a listed booster, which becomes a maintenance obligation for the homeowner, or a documented exception. We will lay out all three honestly and let you choose, but none of them are as good as moving the duct when the framing was open.
Can you hold a trim-out date?
We can hold the date; we cannot control the appliance. The airflow reading requires a dryer that is set and connected, so if the machine has not landed the visit becomes a partial and we come back. On tight schedules the honest answer is to tell us the appliance delivery date rather than the closing date.
Do you handle gas dryer connections?
Anything on the gas side goes to a licensed pro — either ours or yours — and is signed off under whatever the local jurisdiction has adopted. We are not going to stretch a vent scope to cover a fuel connection, and you should be wary of a vent contractor who offers to. The exhaust duct, the termination, and the airflow verification are ours.
How is this priced across a subdivision?
Per plan rather than per lot, once we have walked one of each plan type. Identical houses cost the same to vent; the variables are plan geometry, termination type, and whether the laundry needs a recessed box. Custom homes are quoted individually because there is nothing to repeat.
Will you flag something another trade did?
In the report, yes — quietly and in writing to you, not to the buyer. A screw driven through a duct by a drywall or electrical crew is a real finding, and burying it does not help anyone once the house is occupied. What we will not do is issue an opinion on another trade's overall workmanship; we describe the condition of the run we are responsible for.
Can you cover multifamily buildings, not just single-family?
Yes. Stacked units and shared shafts are the harder version of the same problem — the developed length math per unit matters more, and roof terminations need coordinating with the schedule rather than squeezing in at the end. That work runs through the same team as our commercial programs.
