Dryer Vent Glossary

Every term that shows up on one of our reports, explained in plain English. It's the same vocabulary a home inspector, a code official, or your dryer's installation manual will use — worth ten minutes before you approve any quote.

Lint

Fine fabric fibres shed during drying — the fuel in every dryer-vent fire.

Fine cellulose and synthetic fibres released as fabric tumbles. The lint screen catches most of it, but a meaningful fraction passes into the exhaust duct on every cycle and settles where the airflow slows — at elbows, at the base of vertical rises, and behind the exterior damper. It is dry, has enormous surface area for its mass, and sits in the path of a heat source, which is why accumulation is treated as a fire-risk issue rather than a housekeeping one.

Developed Length

The duct's effective length after adding penalties for each fitting — not the tape measure distance.

The number that actually governs whether a dryer run is compliant. Straight duct counts at its real length; fittings add equivalent length on top — roughly 5 feet for a 90-degree elbow and about 2.5 feet for a 45. A run measuring 15 feet with four 90s has a developed length near 35 feet, which is the residential maximum. This is why a short-looking run in the middle of a house can be over the limit.

Transition Duct

The listed flexible connector between the dryer and the wall outlet.

The one flexible section permitted in a dryer exhaust. It must be a listed transition duct, a single unbroken length no longer than 8 feet, and it must remain visible — it cannot be concealed or pass through a wall. Generic foil hose sold alongside it is not the same product. In practice this is the most commonly damaged part of the whole system, because it gets crushed when the dryer is pushed back against the wall.

Rigid Metal Duct

Smooth-wall 4-inch metal duct — the only material permitted inside walls and ceilings.

Concealed dryer exhaust must be smooth-wall rigid metal, joined so the interior stays smooth in the direction of airflow, with no screws penetrating into the airway. The reason is mechanical rather than bureaucratic: every ridge, seam or projecting screw tip is a shelf that catches lint, and concealed duct cannot be inspected or effectively cleaned.

Backdraft Damper

The flap at the exterior termination that opens on airflow and closes when the dryer stops.

Required at the termination. It keeps outside air, rain, insects and animals out when the dryer is idle, and opens under exhaust pressure when it runs. Damper flaps are the part that fails most predictably in Texas — sun exposure makes plastic brittle, and a flap that sticks half-open invites nesting while one that sticks closed blocks the exhaust entirely.

Termination

Where the duct discharges outdoors — and it must be outdoors.

The exterior end of the system: a wall hood, a roof jack, or a purpose-built vent. It has to discharge outside the building and away from openings back into it. Venting into an attic, crawlspace or garage is never permitted, because a single load discharges several litres of water plus lint into a space with no way to handle either.

Screen Prohibition

Why a mesh screen must never be fitted over a dryer termination.

Fine mesh at the exhaust outlet clogs with lint into a solid felt mat, usually within a season, at which point the screen itself is the blockage. The code prohibits screening a dryer termination for exactly this reason. Animal exclusion is handled instead by a functioning damper or a guard with openings wide enough to pass lint. A homeowner-fitted screen is among the most common self-inflicted blockages.

Booster Fan

A listed in-line fan that assists a run which is legitimately too long.

An interlocked in-line fan, rated for lint-laden air, that runs only when the dryer runs. It is the correct engineering answer to a developed length that genuinely exceeds what the appliance and code allow and cannot be shortened. It is the wrong answer to a duct that is simply dirty — a fan pushing air through a blockage masks the symptom and adds a motor that will foul. It also introduces a recurring cleaning requirement of its own.

Periscope Vent

A shallow rectangular connector that lets the dryer sit close to the wall.

A flat, telescoping metal connector used where the wall outlet and the dryer's exhaust port are close but not aligned. It solves the crushed-transition problem by removing the need for a folded flexible hose behind the machine. It only works where the outlet and port are reasonably aligned; a large offset needs a recessed vent box or a relocated outlet instead.

Recessed Vent Box

A wall cavity that lets the duct connection sit behind the plane of the wall.

A box set into the wall so the elbow and connection are recessed rather than protruding, allowing the dryer to sit flat against the wall without compressing anything. It is the permanent fix for the single most common airflow loss in a laundry room. Fitting one means opening the wall, so it is easiest during construction or a renovation.

Source Removal

Cleaning that physically extracts lint from the whole run rather than vacuuming the visible ends.

The standard a real cleaning is measured against: mechanical agitation along the full duct combined with extraction, working from both ends where access allows, so material leaves the system rather than being redistributed within it. A vacuum hose pushed in from behind the dryer reaches a small fraction of a typical run and does not address the elbows and termination where the lint actually collects.

Airflow Verification

Measuring exhaust airflow before and after work so the result is a number, not a claim.

Measurement taken at the termination to establish the system's actual performance. Taken before and after a cleaning, it demonstrates whether the work changed anything. It also separates the two main failure modes: if airflow does not improve after a genuine cleaning, the problem is the duct's design or condition rather than accumulation, and more cleaning will not fix it.

Thermal Cut-Out

The safety switch that shuts a dryer down when it runs too hot — often the first symptom of a blocked vent.

A thermostat or fuse that interrupts the dryer when temperature exceeds its design limit. Because a restricted exhaust traps heat that should have left with the air, repeated cut-out trips are one of the clearest signs of a blocked vent. Homeowners typically respond by restarting the machine, which is why the warning is so often missed until the appliance or the duct fails.

Gas Dryer Disconnect

Licensed work required to move a gas dryer for service.

Disconnecting and reconnecting the fuel line on a gas dryer is licensed gas work in Texas and ends with a leak test. It is the point at which servicing a dryer vent stops being homeowner-doable. It also matters more on gas appliances than electric ones, because combustion products share the same restricted exhaust path as the moisture.

Exhaust Moisture Load

The water a dryer removes from clothes and discharges through the duct.

Every load moves a substantial volume of water out of the fabric and into the exhaust stream. That is why the termination must discharge outdoors and why a disconnected run inside a building is so damaging: the water goes into insulation, framing or a wall cavity instead of outside. A laundry room that becomes humid during a cycle is showing that some of that moisture is not leaving.

Vertical Rise

An upward duct section where lint the airflow cannot carry over the top falls back and collects.

Any vertical run in the exhaust path. Lint lifted partway up and not carried over settles at the base, making the bottom of a rise the primary accumulation point in many second-floor laundry systems — and usually the least accessible part of the run. It is the main reason upstairs laundries need attention sooner than their run length alone would suggest.

Roof Jack

A roof-mounted dryer termination.

The termination used where a run exits through the roof rather than a wall, common with interior second-floor laundry rooms. It works, but it sits in full sun and out of sight, so its damper is the component most likely to have gone brittle and stopped moving without anyone noticing. It also removes the homeowner's ability to check airflow by hand, which is the early-warning signal that catches most ground-floor problems.

Crushed Transition

A folded or compressed flexible connector behind the dryer — the most common single airflow loss.

What happens when a dryer is pushed flat against a wall over a protruding elbow, folding the flexible connector into a tight S. It can cost more airflow than the rest of the run combined and it happens on delivery day, in houses of any age. Nobody tells homeowners that a dryer needs clearance behind it, which is why this is found so consistently.

Lint Accumulation Monitor

A pressure-based device that signals when restriction reaches a threshold.

A monitor that watches static pressure in the exhaust and alerts when it rises past a set point, indicating accumulation. Genuinely useful on long, complex or concealed runs where there is no other early warning. On a short straight run it will rarely if ever trigger — and a device that never triggers trains you to ignore it, so it is not worth fitting on simple geometry.

Multi-Unit Exhaust

Shared or high-volume dryer exhaust in apartments, condos and commercial laundry.

Systems serving multiple dryers or continuous commercial use. Accumulation is driven by usage volume rather than by duct geometry, so intervals are far shorter — typically quarterly to semi-annual — and the consequences of a blockage are shared across units. These systems are normally engineered rather than assembled, and modifications to them need to respect the original design.
