Why Second-Floor Laundry Rooms Blocked Faster — and What to Do About It
Longer runs, more elbows, a vertical rise that drops lint back down, and a roof termination nobody has ever looked at. The DFW layout that produces most of our call volume.
Putting the laundry upstairs is one of the better floorplan decisions in a family home and one of the worst things you can do to a dryer exhaust. The failure pattern is consistent enough that we can usually predict what we will find before opening anything.
01The geometry works against you from the start
An upstairs laundry is usually interior — surrounded by bedrooms rather than outside walls. So the duct goes up into the attic, turns, travels, turns again, and exits at the roof. That is three or four direction changes before any straight run counts.
We routinely measure developed lengths in the high twenties on houses where the physical distance is under fifteen feet.
02A vertical rise is not neutral
Lint the airflow lifts partway up and cannot carry over the top falls back and settles at the base. Over time that base becomes the primary accumulation point — and it is usually the least accessible part of the whole run.
This is why upstairs systems come back sooner after a cleaning than their length alone suggests. The lint is not returning evenly; it is refilling one specific low point.
03Nobody checks a roof cap
It sits in full Texas sun, out of sight. Plastic damper flaps go brittle, crack, and either stick open to weather and wildlife or stick closed to airflow. We find caps that have not moved in years.
It also removes the homeowner's early-warning signal. You cannot put a hand at a roof termination the way you can at a wall hood, so the problem develops unobserved.
04Attic runs get damaged by other trades
Duct in an attic gets stepped on, leaned on, crushed by stored boxes, and occasionally disconnected by someone working nearby. A disconnected run is the worst version, because the dryer keeps working reasonably well while several litres of water per load go into the insulation.
The tell is a laundry room that seems fine and an attic that smells damp, or a ceiling stain nobody can source.
05What we do differently on these
Measure the developed length rather than assume it. Clean from both ends where roof access allows rather than only from the laundry side. Verify the roof cap actually moves. And where the geometry genuinely exceeds what is allowed, quote the reroute or the booster rather than clean a run that will fail again.
A booster is a legitimate answer to a genuinely over-length run and the wrong answer to a dirty one. We will not fit one to mask a blockage.
If your laundry is upstairs, assume the run is longer and less forgiving than it looks, and assume nobody has ever inspected the roof cap. That single check catches most of what goes wrong with these systems.
