What the Code Actually Says About Dryer Vents — IRC M1502 in Plain English
Duct material, the 35-foot rule, why flexible foil is not permitted in the wall, and what a screen on the termination gets you. The requirements that govern your laundry room, without the code-book language.
Almost every dryer-vent problem we are called to is a code violation that has been quietly running for years. Not because anyone was reckless — because the requirements are specific, unglamorous, and nobody hands them to a homeowner. Here is what the residential code actually requires, and why each rule exists.
01Rigid metal, and only rigid metal, inside the building
Concealed duct has to be smooth-wall rigid metal at 4 inches in diameter, and it has to be joined so the interior stays smooth in the direction of airflow. The reason is mechanical: every ridge in a corrugated duct is a shelf, and lint accumulates on shelves. A flexible foil run inside a wall is a lint collector you cannot inspect and cannot clean.
That is also why the code prohibits screws that penetrate into the airway. A screw tip projecting into the duct catches lint the same way a ridge does, at a point nobody will ever see.
02The 35-foot rule and what elbows cost
Maximum developed length is 35 feet, and that number is not the tape-measure distance — it is the equivalent length after you subtract for fittings. A 90-degree elbow subtracts about 5 feet, a 45-degree elbow about 2 and a half. A run with four 90s has spent roughly 20 of its 35 feet on corners before any straight duct is counted.
This is why a laundry room in the middle of a house is a harder problem than one on an exterior wall, and why we measure the developed length rather than eyeballing it. Manufacturers may allow a longer run than the code default with a specific listed configuration — that permission comes from the appliance instructions, not from optimism.
03The transition duct is the one flexible piece allowed
The visible connector between the dryer and the wall may be flexible, but it must be a listed transition duct, it must be a single unbroken length no longer than 8 feet, and it cannot be concealed or pass through a wall. The listing is what separates a real transition duct from generic foil hose sold beside it.
It also has to not be crushed, which is where the practical failure lives. Push a dryer flat against a wall over a rigid elbow and you have compressed the one part of the system that was allowed to be flexible.
04Termination: outside, with a damper, without a screen
The duct has to terminate outdoors, with a backdraft damper, and away from openings into the building. Venting into an attic, a crawlspace or a garage is never permitted — that is dumping several litres of water per load into a space that cannot handle it, plus lint.
And the rule people find counterintuitive: the termination must not have a screen. A mesh screen looks sensible, and it clogs solid with lint in a season, at which point it becomes the blockage. Animal exclusion is handled by a damper or a purpose-built guard with wide openings, never by fine mesh.
05Gas dryers add a second set of rules
A gas dryer is a fuel-burning appliance and its connection is licensed gas work in Texas. Moving one to clean behind it means disconnecting a gas line, and reconnecting means leak-testing. This is the point at which we stop describing homeowner-doable maintenance.
It is also why a blocked exhaust on a gas dryer is more serious than on an electric one: the combustion products have the same restricted path out that the moisture does.
None of these requirements are obscure and almost none of them are met in the homes we inspect. If your laundry duct is flexible foil in the wall, or has more elbows than you can count, or terminates behind a screen, you have found the reason the dryer is slow — and the fix is a code-compliant rebuild, not another cleaning.
