Why Your Dryer Takes Two Cycles (And What It's Actually Costing You)
A dryer that needs two cycles isn't wearing out — it's usually telling you the exhaust can't get the moisture out. Here's how to tell the difference before you replace an appliance that's fine.
The second cycle is the most common reason anyone calls us, and it's also the most commonly misread. Homeowners assume the machine is dying. Appliance techs sometimes agree, because from inside the cabinet a dryer with a blocked exhaust looks a lot like a dryer with a failing heating element. The difference matters, because one of those costs a service call and the other costs a new appliance.
01What a dryer actually has to do
Drying is not primarily about heat. It is about moving moisture out of the drum and out of the building. The heater raises the air temperature so it can hold more water, the drum tumbles so the air reaches the fabric, and the blower pushes that now-humid air down the duct and outside. Break the last step and the first two stop mattering.
When the exhaust is restricted, humid air stays in the drum. The clothes sit in their own moisture and the machine runs its full cycle without getting them dry. So it runs again. The heater is fine. The motor is fine. The air has nowhere to go.
02The two-minute test that tells you which it is
Start a normal cycle, go outside, and put your hand at the exterior hood. You should feel a strong, warm, steady push of air — enough to move the damper flaps visibly. If the damper barely lifts, or you feel warmth without force, the restriction is in the duct.
If the airflow outside is strong but the clothes are still damp, that points back at the machine — usually a heating element or a thermostat, which is genuinely an appliance repair. That single check separates the two failures better than anything else you can do without tools.
03Where the blockage usually is
In our experience the restriction is rarely spread evenly along the run. It concentrates at three places: the transition behind the machine where the duct gets crushed when the dryer is pushed back against the wall, the first elbow where lint drops out of the airstream when it changes direction, and the exterior termination where a damper flap sticks half-closed or a bird has built in it.
That is why cleaning only the section you can reach behind the dryer often produces a week of improvement and then the same complaint. The reachable part was not the problem.
04What it costs while you ignore it
Every extra cycle is a full cycle of energy — the heater is the largest electrical load in most laundry rooms, and gas dryers burn fuel for the whole second run too. Doubling the run time on a household load roughly doubles that. Over a year in a family house, that is real money for a fault that takes an hour to fix.
The wear cost is quieter but larger. Running at elevated temperature because the heat cannot escape is hard on the heating element, the thermostats and the belt, and it is the reason a blocked vent eventually does kill the appliance people were blaming in the first place.
05The part we would rather not have to say
Lint is fuel, and a restricted duct concentrates it against a heat source. Dryer fires are not a scare tactic invented by vent companies — they are a documented, common category of residential fire, and failure to clean is the leading identified cause. A dryer taking two cycles has been telling you for months that the exhaust is not clearing.
That is the honest reason we treat a two-cycle complaint as urgent rather than as a comfort issue.
If your dryer needs two cycles, check the airflow at the exterior hood before you price a new machine. Weak air outside means the exhaust is the problem, and the exhaust is fixable. Strong air outside with damp clothes means the appliance needs a tech. Either way you will know which call to make, and you will not spend a thousand dollars replacing something that was working.
