How a Dryer Vent Fire Actually Starts — And the Three Conditions It Needs
Lint is fuel, restriction is the accelerant, and heat is always present. Remove any one of the three and the fire does not happen. Here is what each one looks like in a real laundry room.
Dryer fires are one of the few household fire categories where the cause is almost always the same and almost always preventable. Understanding the mechanism is more useful than a statistic, because once you can see the three conditions, you can check your own laundry room in about five minutes.
01Condition one: fuel
Lint is fine, dry cellulose and synthetic fibre with an enormous surface area relative to its mass — which is the textbook description of an easily ignited fuel. The lint screen catches most of what comes off a load, but a meaningful fraction goes past it and into the duct every single cycle, and it accumulates where the air slows down.
That accumulation is not visible from the laundry room. By the time you can see lint at the exterior hood, the duct behind it has been collecting for a long time.
02Condition two: restriction
Restriction is what turns a fuel supply into a fire risk. As the duct narrows with accumulation, airflow drops, and as airflow drops, temperature rises — the heat the exhaust is supposed to carry away stays in the system instead. Modern dryers have thermal cut-outs that trip when this happens, which is why a blocked-vent dryer often starts shutting itself off mid-cycle.
A cut-out tripping repeatedly is the appliance telling you it is running hotter than it was designed to. People usually respond by restarting it.
03Condition three: heat
The heat is always there — it is the point of the machine. What changes is where it ends up. In a clear system the heat leaves with the air. In a restricted one it soaks into the duct, the cabinet and the accumulated lint sitting against them.
This is why the sequence matters more than any single factor. You cannot remove the heat from a dryer. You can absolutely remove the fuel and the restriction, and removing either one breaks the chain.
04The five-minute check you can do yourself
Pull the lint screen and look at the housing beneath it with a torch — accumulation there means it is getting past. Feel the top of the dryer at the end of a cycle; it should be warm, not hot. Look behind the machine for a crushed or kinked transition. Go outside during a cycle and confirm the damper is being pushed open by real airflow. Check whether the laundry room itself gets humid.
Any one of those failing is worth a proper look. Two or more is not something to schedule for next month.
05What we will not tell you
We will not tell you a cleaning makes your house safe, because it does not by itself. If the duct is undersized, over-length, foil inside the wall, or terminating into a screen, cleaning it resets the clock without fixing the mechanism. We would rather quote the rebuild and be honest about why.
We also will not sell a lint alarm to a household with a 6-foot straight run. On that geometry it will never trigger, and a device that never triggers teaches you to ignore it.
Fuel, restriction, heat. The heat is not optional, so the whole of prevention is keeping the other two out of the system — which is what a real cleaning and a code-compliant duct actually buy you. If your dryer is running hot or shutting itself off, treat it as the warning it is.
